Short Description: Dive Snorkel Seabreathe dolphins fishing nightdive

Long Description: Mauna Kea Divers

Mauna Kea Divers is a service orientated operation, we strive to make each individual or group comfortable and satisfied with every service we provide. We are a great value.

Island Voyager
Island Voyager is a 25 passenger custom water activity vessel built for Hawaiian waters. Her modern design affords passengers a dry ride to and from dive sites with plenty of shade or sun whichever is preferred. Many times we see, AND SWIM WITH, the Hawaiian spinner dolphins frolicking in the wake from the bow or stern of the boat. They are very entertaining. The vessel is crewed by licensed captains and certified scuba instructors, and divemasters, so your trip will be safe and enjoyable.

On board we carry gear for 12 divers and snorkel gear for 25. Trips usually have just a few divers and snorkelers so there is plenty of room. We have a head on board and a freshwater shower. The boat departs from Kawaihae harbor which is close to the 30 plus dive sites where you'll see a variety of colorful reefs, tropical fish, seashells and other fascinating marine life. We can visit interesting underwater formations, arches, caverns, and some lava tubes to swim through, and we can even describe things to you underwater using our pocket communicator. This device is excellent for teaching, and showing small animals from far away where using words is necessary. Visibility is generally 80 to 100 ft. and sometimes reaches 150ft. These are ideal conditions for underwater photography and video whether scuba, sea breathe diving, or snorkeling. Diving depths are usually between twenty to eighty ft., so we get good bottom times and this is where the best color, corals, and sea life is. Deeper diving is available to depths of 130 ft. where we can still see a variety of sea life. One of the most exhilarating activities to participate in underwater is the night dive. The reef "wakes up" at night, see eels, lobster, crab, shrimp, living shells cruising the reef, manta rays, and much more. This is the best dive.

Mauna Kea Divers offers scuba certifications up to the divemaster level. This is a great place to get certified, complete your open water training, achieve specialties, or advance in your diving education. If you have been certified but have not dove in quite some time we can save you some expense by updating your certification. If you are not certified but think you might enjoy diving, try our discover scuba diving course. You'll cover the basics, practice with the gear in confined water, then go on an ocean dive with an instructor who will show you the reef, and be your buddy. Min. age 10 yrs. Old. You can try sea breathe too, the air supply is on the surface and hoses deliver air to a depth of 25ft. this is a great introduction to diving; minimum age is 8 yrs. Old.

Mauna Kea Divers has the only boat where you can go scuba, sea breathe diving, or snorkeling, take a shower, change into dry clothes, then head out to the fertile fishing grounds of the Kohala coast to catch dinner. When we catch fish on the "Island Voyager" we encourage you to bring it home or to your resort and the best part is we will fillet the catch so you carry a plastic bag off the boat, not a messy fish.

Another special trip is the private, family excursion. We go wherever you like or to one of our own great places where you can scuba, sea breathe diving, snorkel, or all of them. If you don't know how we'll show you; it is so easy when taught by professionals. When the water fun is finished we'll go fishing or whale watching (in season) and all this is included in the price. Do the math, it is only a little more to get the boat all to yourselves.

Testimonials: Epic!!!!!!!!!!! Day one - Dove in a few incredible spots. Cave dives were spectacular. Jim and the crew definitely styled us. Day two - MKD answered my four requests from day one. 1. Swam with dolphins 2. Played with a squid. 3. Rode a sea turtle - just kidding...saw many. 4. Caught an Ono that Jim generously fileted so we could eat it for dinner that evening. I WILL BE BACK! To Jim and the rest of the guys...WELL DONE! Thanks for 2 memorable days. My visit to the big island would have not been complete without diving with you all. The most professional and courteous group in Hawaii, I could not have been more pleased than to have completed my open water certification with Jim. Beyond incredible dives in crystal waters, we swam with a group of dolphins and reeled in a 40 lb Ono on our return to the harbor. If you visit Hawaii, your trip will not be complete without a visit to Jim and the rest of the guys at Mauna Kea Divers. Jim, Todd and I will definitely be back. Mahalo

My very first Hawaii dives were with Jim and his crew. I always new they were top notch but i didn't realize just how good Mauna Kea Divers is until i tried some of the other guys. Jim brings you to the very best dive sites and shows you things that you would never even notice on your own. He is equally good with the inexperienced diver. After watching the way he handled other intro divers i convinced my mother (age 52) who had never even snorkeled to do an intro dive with Jim. She loved it. This was an experience that neither of us will forget, thanks Jim!
