Short Description: High Arctic Adventure

Long Description: Since 1987, Adventure Canada has operated a full program of outdoor adventure, wildlife viewing, photography, art, culture, and eco-tours throughout Canada and around the world.
We specialize in expedition-style cruising and small-group active holidays. Come, and discover Canada and the world like you've never seen it before.

In September 2003, Adventure Canada, in association with Canadian Geographic, the Quebec-Labrador Foundation and Cuisine Canada, is pleased to present an expedition cruise that will explore southern Greenland, coastal Labrador and Newfoundland. We will begin at the very farm that Leif Eriksson set out from so many years ago. After a short time in Greenland, we will cross the Labrador Sea in modern comfort aboard the 98-passenger expedition vessel M/V Polar Star. Following along the Labrador coast, we will explore one of most inaccessible coastlines in the world north of Nain. Our program will examine the history, culture, geology and natural history of the area while we travel in the shadow of the impressive Torngat Mountains, steaming alongside ancient icebergs drifting south in the Labrador Current. Further south, our exploration continues with a visit to Leif Eriksson’s camp and the UNESCO World Heritage Site at L’Anse aux Meadows, before ending our excursion in North America’s oldest port, St. John’s, Newfoundland.

For 2003, we have planned an exquisite look at two of the world's most seductive islands. Baffin Island on Canada's Arctic east coast is part of Canada's newest territory - Nunavut. Baffin is the fifth largest island in the world and has welcomed explorers and adventurers to the new world for over 500 years. Its Native population are the Inuit, Canada's Eskimo people, who have followed a marine hunting tradition for centuries. Baffin Island offers the contemporary traveller an outstanding glimpse of the arctic environment. Greenland is the largest island in the world. Much of coastal Greenland meets the sea in towering cliffs, walls of glacial ice and some of the oldest rock in the world. Much of the island lies under up to 3000 meters of ice. Polar wildlife, hundreds of botanical species and some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world make these islands a joy to visit.

In 2003, Adventure Canada will undertake a Voyage to the remote islands of western Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Rather than the usual tourist stops, we'll visit wild places of unusual beauty and rich history that even most natives would find largely inaccessible. This will be a rare opportunity to stop at magical islands such as St. Kilda, Fair Isle, Aran Isles and Iona. Whether it's the rugged beauty of the Hebrides or the lush green hills of Connemara, the diversity of our adventure in the outer fringes of the British Isles will provide a perspective entirely different from the cultured streets of Dublin and London.

Policies: Adventure Canada is often referred to as an "eco-tourism" company, which in part is true. "Eco-tourism" (before companies took on the term as a marketing angle) is what adventurers have been doing for millennia - seeking out authentic experiences within the natural environment, leaving the places they visit virtually untouched. This is what we strive for, but in the purest sense, if we travel to a destination on a jet, we are having an impact on the environment. Therefore, we prefer the term "sustainable tourism," as this is what will allow us to continue to explore remote areas of the world without ruining them for future generations. We promote a philosophy of respect for the natural and cultural world, with which, by giving access to sensitive areas and sharing this philosophy with travellers, we hope to promote a wider and greater respect and understanding for environmental issues here in Canada and around the world.
