Sometimes the measure of a good guide is not how many fish you catch on a good day, but how he handles a trip for you when everything is bad. I had planned an early spring trip with BC Fly Fisher, to seek coastal cutthroat and solitude in the beautiful Fraser River Valley, at the end of a business trip to Vancouver. On the day I reached
Chilliwack, there was a record snowfall, record low temperature, and wind gusting to 30 MPH. In short, the water was too cold, too rough, the fish were down, and the gusts would obliterate the most manly double haul of the five weight I had packed along. Rick came through with a change of plans and we fished for winter steelhead. Rick had the tackle so I put on every scrap of clothing I could and we set off in search of castable waters. Those of you who have fished salt water have probably had a day where the guide runs his boat to many different spots, in search of good fishing. Rick's "flats boat" is his four wheel drive and he did run all over the Fraser River Valley, looking for places that had fish that were not glued to the bottom and wind gusts less than 30 MPH. Steelheading is usually a crowded kind of fishing, but Rick managed to get to each choice lie about 20 minutes before the plug chuckers showed up. When they did show up, they seemed a bit awed by the fact that we were fly fishing in those winds. All in all, it was a wild day of incredible tough angling, but one that I will remember for a lifetime. The Fraser River Valley is a great place to fish and Rick is a great guide to go with.
Sincerely,
J. P. McDermott,
Washington, DC
